Roby

Roby's godfathers are Uncle Nat and Uncle Mike.  Uncle Nat is Nathaniel French, named for Robert French Leavens, my Great-Grandfather.  He was named for his grandfather, Roby French. Just like Uncle Mike, Roby is the "older" twin, though for the record, we're not planning on telling them that.

Uncle Mike, who is very busy at the moment, authored a late night heartfelt and very funny note to Roby which was read by Aunt Ellie (also kid number three of four) at the baptism.

Roby - the internet tells me that your name means "bright fame" or "famously famous". So if you're going to be a celebrity someday, you probably could use some god-fatherly advice.

Firstly, there are lots of ways to become famous - however there are ways to become famous, and then there are ways NOT to become famous...

For example:
- Developing a real talent
- Inventing something
- Being extremely charitable
- Setting a world record

As opposed to:

- Becoming a reality tv star
- Committing a crime
- Embarrassing yourself on YouTube

So, for your family's sake (and that other kid who looks a heck of a lot like you), please choose your path wisely.

Secondly, don't forget where you came from. From what i can tell this is something that a lot of hip hop artists say. Admittedly it may be somewhat less relevant for you, but i think the key take away here is to always remember how fortunate you are to have such a loving and supportive family. I'm sure this will come in handy someday - most celebrities hit rock bottom before they truly make it.

Lastly, as a warning, when you become famous, there will be a lot of people following you and trying to take your picture. Luckily for you, you've got an identical twin to blame everything on and to send out as a decoy for the paparazzi. So my last piece of advice is to be nice to your brother (even when he picks on you for being "too artsy") - you're really going to need him someday.

Your loving uncle,
Mike

Uncle Nat read a the prayer below.  This was read at our wedding, Grandma and Zeke's wedding, and at both Sarah Jane's and Anna's baptisms.  Roby has a special connection to this as it was written by Robert Leavens, for whom he, Nat and Zeke are all named.

Immortal Love,
            all human loves excelling,
of all human loves the source,
How shall we thank thee
for the bonds of affection with which we
are made members of one another?
To those who gave us birth and have nurtured us,
To those who have been the guides of our
            childhood and youth,
To those who are our brothers and sisters,
To those whose lives are linked with ours in
bonds off friendship
To these, to all others, dear to us, present or
            absent
            near or far,
            companions invisible,
a cloud of witnesses surrounding us,
We pay the tribute of our grateful love,
And because of their faith in us,
Here before thee we pledge anew our loyalty
            to them.

Prayer written by Robert French Leavens,
Unitarian Minister and Great-Great-Grandfather of Roby

Eli

Eli's godparents are his Uncle Matt and Aunt Laurie.  Given the shotgun nature of this baptism, we didn't give them much of a heads up.  (Planning ahead is beyond my life skills at the moment.  It's all about getting through the next 10 mintues.)  Despite the late notice, they more than delivered with the reading below.

Matt is Mathew Stephen, Eli is Eli Stephen.  Eli is the second born twin, younger by two minutes.  Matt is also the "younger" twin.  Eli is our only kiddo with a traditional set of godparents, everyone else got either two godmommies or two godfathers, most appropriate in Berkeley.  Aunt Laurie, previously known as "Cousin Lolo" is going to rock this job, I know.  We are looking forward to our next big photo op which will be at their wedding this September!

Eli, we are honored and blessed to be your Godparents.
May your and Roby's lives be a wonderful adventure!
We promise to love and support you always.
One of the greatest joys of growing up as a twin is always having someone around who knows you best!
We think this passage from Winnie the Pooh, by A.A. Milne gives a little insight into this.
 Christopher Robin says to Pooh,
“If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together... there is something you must always remember. you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart... I'll always be with you.”
 God Bless you Eli!
lots of love from your Aunt Lauri and Uncle Matt.

Bapersized!

The boys were baptized today - or as Sarah Jane called it - bapersized.  We were lucky enough to have four VIPs from the East coast in attendance, GG, Aunt Ellie, Nana and Papa.  More details to come, but in the meantime, here are some pictures of the festivities.

Roby on the left (striped pants), Eli on the right (smocking).

The girls worked really hard to make these pictues work.  The boys were not so cooperative.

8 months!

Eli and Roby are two thirds of their way through the first year.  Hard to believe.  This month was the two steps forward, one step back month.  Or maybe it was one step forward, two steps back?  I'm not sure...

We are now the proud collective owners of 8 teeth.  Four per kid.  Eli's working on his next batch, Roby seems to be taking some time off.

Anna was doing something very interesting.  Roby was clearly closer and found it somewhat worrisome.
We "successfully" dropped our 10pm dream feed.  Success lasted for about 4 blissful days until the boys figured out what we were up to and retaliated by instituing a 4am no-dream zone which is only terminated by milk, speedily delivered.  So not cool.  I'm voting for a return to the 10pm feeding as 4am is my responsibility.  Dave is in the 4am camp as 10pm is his responsibility.  Negotiations continue...

Roby can finally sit up but he can't get there himself.  Eli can get himself to sitting but he can't stay there.  Two halves of a whole?

Both boys have figured out eating but are pretty picky.  They do NOT enjoy certain jars while others get gobbled up.  I'm too tired to remember which is which and who likes what.  As a result we have a lot of opened, uneaten jars in our fridge.  For the record, kids number three and four do not get homemade baby food.

Both Eli and Roby have figured out transportation.  They can comando crawl themselves to any location.  They also both spend a great deal of time on all fours rocking back and forth wondering why they aren't moving.  That synapse has apparently not yet made the connection.  Going to be interesting when it does.

Roby has figured out how to give kisses and how to tickle himself.  Pretty entertaining, tickling yourself.  He is also highly entertained by bouncing in his doorway swing.

Eli is very focused on consuming his high chair, hiding under beds and eating cheerios.  He is less enthusiastic about bouncing.  He also LOVES his big sisters.  Who love him right back.

Couldn't decide which of these I liked the best.   The girls were very glad to finally get in on the picture action.  Eli thought it was highly entertaining as well.  Roby wished he had more access to oxygen.

More rocking out

Last holiday post, I couldn't resist.

Anna got a guitar for Christmas this year so she could finally join the family band.  Sarah Jane likes to use hers to be Maria (a la the Sound of Music.)

Anna has a different sound in mind.

New Years in pictures

We spent New Years Eve with the kids at the "Noon Years Eve" party at the Discovery Museum in Marin.
The girls wore fancy dresses and got bags of swag which included necklaces and bubbles.  A big hit.
They had a DJ.  We rocked out.
Dave got to wear the sunglasses.

The Chuns went with us too.  Andy pointed out that Sarah Jane has already mastered her "sorority girl picture lean-in."
Here I am, two-fisting the babies.  Dartmouth style.  Directly after this picture we lost Drew-Drew and the other three adults scattered into the crowd looking for him while I stayed with the remaining five kids, doing the count-down and watching a big rubber ball get tossed off a balcony.  Just as anti-climatic as the real thing.  Thankfully we found Drew-Drew who did not know he was lost and I didn't lose anyone else.  Phew..

The girls recovered the next day with a bit of screen time.

Happy late New Years to all of you!

After Christmas Dave and I took the girls to the beach for some "alone" time.  For the record, two kids is way easier than four.  I got to play with my new camera lens.  So fun!

Pretty sweet, eh?  I Living in California is so insanely wonderful.  Particularly when it is snowing everywhere else.

Dave was sent with a bucket for water.

He misjudged the waves and came back a bit wet.

 Snuggling with dad.
Anna dipped her graham cracker in the ocean.  Apparently it was good because she went back for more.

I like my new toy.  Thank you Dave.
