Sarah Jane at 3 and a half

Sarah Jane at 3
(Long post but pictures at the bottom and a surprise half way through!)

A typical day in Sarah Jane’s life goes something like this:
She wakes up at some point between 2am and 5am and stumbles into our room. She pauses at the door until I say, “come on in and tuck yourself in” at which point she crawls between two comforters set up on the floor specifically for this purpose and goes right back to sleep. Occasionally she makes it all the way until 6ish in her bed (occasionally as in twice since January.) She is aware that when the babies come she is going to spend all night in her own bed, like a big girl. We’ll see.

At 6am she is awake and waits very patiently for Anna to wake up so that Daddy will go get her bottle. And by very patiently I mean she only asks me every 5 minutes if it is time for her bottle yet. She points out that it is light outside and she is very reasonable, every five minutes. Daddy manages to sleep through all of this. When Anna finally wakes up, Sarah Jane goes with Daddy to help him with the bottles and then delivers Anna’s. Sarah Jane has her bottle in our room (and yes I know that a three year old getting a warmed up bottle of milk every morning might strike some as a bit egregious but we all like our warm beverages in the morning and wouldn’t you like yours delivered?) After Anna finishes hers, Sarah Jane runs into play with Anna which we LOVE as it means snoozing to the sound of happy giggles. Nothing better.

By 8 Sarah Jane is downstairs and eating. Sometimes dressed, sometimes not. Sometimes showered, sometimes not. She knows the days of the week by what we have for breakfast: Monday – Eatmeal, Tuesday – Eggs and Toast, repeat for Wed, Thurs, Fri, pancakes for Saturday and French toast for Sunday. Some days are work days, which means Elizabeth comes and Daddy leaves and she goes to school. Some days are NOT workdays which means she gets syrup for breakfast. Sarah Jane also gets tea at breakfast. I’m not sure how this started. It’s decaf at least. And she only gets one sugar cube (mommy gets two.) Sarah Jane is a very difficult eater and still requires that I “help” her eat, e.g., put her food on the fork and, occasionally, wield the fork for her. Often as a car (she specifies which family member's car as Aunt Whitney's car sounds different from Grandma's.)  Sometimes we get unusual requests; today I did a horse, two chickens and a fairy horse.  Neither of us knew what that sounded like.  She “understands” that this won’t happen anymore when the twins come. She can sometimes be induced into eating if it’s a contest. She really, really likes to win and announces “I’m beating!!!” with glee. She also really likes anything that comes with syrup. On those days she mysteriously doesn’t need any help.

By 8:45 we have somehow gotten Sarah Jane ready to leave for school. She is an amazing procrastinator. She is in school at Berkeley Hills from 9 until 1. Her most airtime friends are Callie and Henry and Bryn. She is also friends with Lucy and Colm though she says that Colm is not nice to her because he only wants to be Batman. (Sarah Jane likes to stick her hand out in a fist and yell “I’m Superman” and then jump off stuff.) She does lots of art and likes to ride the scooters. The other day she said, “Mom, you know what I’m really good at? Scooters.”

At 1 she is picked up by either Elizabeth (Mondays) or Grandma or Zeke. She is dropped off at either the park or Studio Grow or Habitot where she spends the next 2ish hours playing with the little people. At 3ish they return home for nap time but Sarah Jane does not get a nap as she will sleep for five hours and ALWAYS wakes up grumpy if she wakes up at all. I wish she could have a nap, I think she’d be happier overall but we haven’t figured out how to make it happen.

On Mondays she goes to ballet at the Y. She won’t tell me anything about it so I have no idea what goes on. I can get her to confirm that her teacher is Teacher Kate.

After an afternoon outing which often involves bikes, they return for dinner. She is very helpful getting ready for dinner often setting the entire table herself. As she approaches her seat she announces “I don’t like that” no matter what “that” is. Sometimes (if it is noodles with no sauce) she will eat it with no discussion. Other items that have occasionally been eaten are hamburgers (usually just the bun), chicken nuggets (but only “real ones” that come from the freezer, not fake ones that mommy makes from scratch), rice, green cookies (cucumbers), tomatoes, meatloaf and food X slathered in ketchup. Once she ate red peppers. She doesn’t have to eat anything on her plate but she doesn’t get any substitutes. And she has to sit with us or go upstairs. That one is harder to enforce. She gets very hungry and the hungrier she gets the harder she is to feed. We work very hard to “break the seal”, once the first bite is in, the rest usually follows.

After dinner there is either frenzied playing with Anna (stroller races around the kitchen, rides on the rocking horses), books on the couch with mom or, weather permitting, bicycle riding outside. Sarah Jane is truly excellent on her scoot bike. Contrary to what you might expect, she is absolutely fearless, bombs down our fairly steep driveway, makes the turn and heads down the sidewalk. And, taking after her father, every time she does this she yells “Whoohoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo”.

Be patient until :30; I couldn't figure out how to edit this down to just the good stuff...

At 7:15 they come inside and have yogurt and fruit for dessert. Sarah Jane is allowed to dispense her own honey and she never puts too much. This part of her meal she eats all up and so I know that no matter how little she’s eaten for dinner, at least she won’t go to bed hungry and wake up at 4am asking for her bottle.

Post dessert, Anna gets a bath. Sometimes Sarah Jane joins her, sometimes she watches home videos on the iPad. She also likes to read books and look at the weather on the iPad. We look at both Berkeley and Warwick so she knows what it is like where Nana and Papa are. When we first started playing with the iPad, turning it off sparked dreadful temper tantrums. We put it away for two days and before it came out again, we had to practice turning it off cheerfully. Now when she plays with it we periodically “practice” turning it off:

               Mommy: “Sarah Jane, let’s practice”
Sarah Jane: “Ok mommy! One more and then I’m done”

Then when we do it for real there is no temper tantrum. Amazing.

At 8pm it is bedtime. Once we actually get her in bed (see procrastination above), she falls asleep in less than 15 seconds despite the fact that Anna can spend the next 45 minutes yelling.

Massive feats of intelligence and achievement
Sarah Jane is currently into “reading aloud” to us. This means that after I read her a book, she then takes the book and “reads” it to me. She is very good at remembering the basic facts or the last sentence on each page and repeating them.

She continues to be excellent at puzzles. Particularly the puzzles on my Droid.

Thanks to the Droid and the alphabet games on said device, she now knows both her upper case and her lower case letters. She still identifies them sometimes as “belonging” to someone but she also knows their names.

She is a fearless and talented scoot rider (see above.) So fearless that she often rides down the sidewalk looking backwards over her shoulder to carry on a conversation, much to Zeke’s discomfort.

Sarah Jane has figured out the way to mommy’s heart and is subsequently very good at making mommy happy (manipulating mommy?) by hugging my belly and announcing, “I love your twins.”

She loves to learn Spanish and likes to show off when she learns something new. She can say Buenos Dias, tengo jugo (I have juice), susio (dirty), zapatos (shoes), venga and my personal favorite “Socksitines” aka Socks + Calcitines. I think she also understands everything Elizabeth says but she can’t translate it back into English.

Sarah Jane can put on and take off her own seat belt in the car; this achievement is particularly well timed as going forward she will be sitting in the “way back” of the new car.

Sarah Jane does a great job clearing her place from the table AND loading the dishwasher. She even knows which side the tall glasses go on and which side the short glasses go on. Very impressive.

Favorites
Loves: Anna, mommy’s twins, daddy, riding her scoot, reading books, taking pictures with the camera, watching home videos, her twin (doll from Grandma), hanging out at Grandma and Zeke’s on the weekend, having mommy stay home from work, nounous (noodles), syrup covered things, winning, wearing soft pants a dress and princess undies, her sparkly shoes, her pink sweatshirt from daddy, playing in the white car with daddy, listening to the Sound of Music soundtrack, “treats” from Starbucks, tea in the morning, teacher Lisa, school in general, Brady and play dates

Dislikes: 99% of food, eating, dogs except Pickle, getting her hair washed, brushing her hair, saying good bye politely and doing what someone asks her to do particularly when that someone is in a hurry

In sum, Sarah Jane is at a great stage. Three is definitely my favorite so far. She is loving and full of hugs. She can be counted on to play with Anna very nicely, to share with Anna (most of the time) and is, in general, a great big sister. Anna is very lucky. While she is occasionally extremely high maintenance, things that used to be a huge fight are getting much easier (e.g., brushing hair, eating, getting into bed, etc.) She is much less scared of things than she used to be (dogs, bikes, saying goodbye) and is starting to have fun trying new things (e.g., jumping off the steps and going to ballet both on the list of dislikes three months ago.)

She's had a lot happen in the last six months, here are some highlights...

Update from bed rest e.g., my "Enforced Sedentary Staycation"

I figured I would write up a posting of my bed rest activities since a) people seem curious and b) I'm pretty sure I'm spending more time over this three month period collectively indulging in these frivolous, non-kid focused and non-movement required endeavors than I will over then next five years. While I've sometimes been frustrated, my guess is I'm going to look back on this time enviously so I might as well record it.  It's sort of like being a second semester senior - all the pressure is off but the world as I know it is about to end.  You enjoy it but there is a feeling of constant dread.  Dread might be the wrong word?  Or maybe not.
(Note - this is a long post but there are bonus pictures at the end if you make it that far...)

Anna at 19 months

Here are Anna's most recent 6-7 months (this was written over a two month period because despite being on bed rest it took me THAT long to get this done.)
From here to there... Anna at 12 months

Anna at 19 months

A day in the life of Anna at 19 months

Anna has recently started to sleep to the late hour of 6:45, a vast improvement on the previous wake up time of any point between 5:30 and 6:30 (on a very good day.) When she wakes up she calls into us. She is very smart and always calls for mom even though mom is stuck in bed and it is ALWAYS dad that delivers the bottle but somehow she knows that mom is the one who wakes dad up. Very tricky. After drinking her morning bottle in her crib (4oz, heated up and don’t even think of putting one of the big kid nipples on the bottle, no thank you!) she calls again and Daddy comes and gets her. She gets to play in Mommy and Daddy’s room for a bit with Sarah Jane (who has moved there to sleep on the floor at some point in the night.) She usually finds some books and climbs into bed on mom’s side to have them read to her. She is very good at climbing up our ridiculously tall bed. She is also very good at using mom’s enormous belly as a kicking off pad.

After book time Anna usually climbs into the shower with whoever gets there first. She LOVES showering. She stands there very quietly and relaxes in the hot water. Very grown up of her! After the shower she usually asks to go potty, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, If not dressed right away, she will then grace our carpet with whatever should have gone in the potty. Thank you Anna. After dressing (if by daddy, jeans, a tee shirt and a sweatshirt, if by mommy, soft pants and a tea dress), she heads downstairs to breakfast. Anna is not our breakfast girl. Unless we are having eggs. Then she eats those all up. She is getting better at oatmeal too but more often than not she is not interested in breakfast food having just recently had her bottle. She sits there and humors us though.

Elizabeth arrives at 8am and gets a big hug from Anna who LOVES Elizabeth. Sometime after 8, Daddy, who has (all in a very coffee deprived state) managed to get two kids dressed, himself dressed, breakfast made, vitamins distributed, and a load of household chores done, departs for work. Both Anna and Sarah Jane enjoy “pushing him out the door.” At 8:45 Elizabeth, Sarah Jane and Anna head up to Berkeley Hills to drop SJ off at school. Then they head back down the hill to wait for Owen who arrives at our house at 9:30 during which time Anna has her second 4oz bottle. After that, Elizabeth, who has very efficiently packed a lunch, takes them off on their day’s adventure. When it’s raining (as it has done lots this winter, it has been a VERY wet winter), they head to either Studio Grow or Habitot, both of which we have memberships to, when it’s nice, they go to the park. They eat lunch and play and play at the various locations. Zeke or Grandma drop Sarah Jane off at 1:30 and they play some more. At around 3pm they head home and Anna goes down for her nap sometime around 3:30 after having her third bottle of the day (which she has in bed to help her fall asleep, something we still do for naps but not for night time.) The length of her nap varies, she could sleep for 45 minutes, she could sleep for two hours. There is no pattern as far as I can tell. On the weekends we put her down earlier and she sleeps for about 2 hours.

After nap there is occasionally another outing, sometime to go for a walk, sometimes to the Red Store (Target) which apparently is very entertaining. Then it’s dinner time. Mom emerges from her room where she is stuck on bed rest (or in the old days, came home from work) and the three of us sit down to eat. Dad usually gets home too late to have dinner with us but occasionally we get him which is always very nice. At 7:15 we have dessert (yogurt, honey and fruit) and at 7:30 it is BathTime!!!! Anna LOVES bathtime, she loves saying it, she loves running upstairs, but then she strangely doesn’t love actually getting in the bath. Once she is in she is happy though. At about 7:50 Anna climbs into my bed with as many books as she can manage and her last bottle of the day. We read the books and then at 8 begin the nightly ritual of “Parental Manipulation by Anna.”

Parental Manipulation includes yelling “Dada Dada Dada” and “Mama Mama Mama” repeatedly, throwing her blanket out of the crib and announcing “Uhoh” (repeatedly), declaring that she has a poopoo in her diaper, declaring that she would like to go to the potty AND taking her PJs off. This can last anywhere from 45 seconds to 90 minutes. Eventually she will decide that she is ready to go to sleep and she will promptly fall asleep but it needs to be an Anna driven decision.

Anna's Likes/Dislikes

LOVES – Elizabeth

LOVES – Maribel and Sandra showing up on Thursdays

LOVES – Sarah Jane

Likes – fish and chicken for dinner

LOVES – dipping anything in ketchup (or anything else for dipping)

LOVES – putting on her jacket and Sarah Jane’s boots (likes her own boots too but SJs boots are better)
Anna in SJ's boots (SJ in mommy's boots)

LOVES – broccoli, may be the only child in the history of the world that could seriously OD on broccoli

Likes – hugs

Likes – Running around the house with Sarah Jane pushing one of the baby strollers

Loves – showering in the morning, the only time she seems relaxed and stands still

Loves – playing with Sarah Jane in mommy and daddy’s room in the morning

Loves – having certain books read over and over and over (Moo Baa Lalala, Pop out Pets, Biscuit, Bobo, book about animals with doors that slide open)

Dislikes – being criticized or said no to

Dislikes – having things taken away (often bites in frustration, often directed at Sarah Jane who is often doing the taking)

Dislikes – going to sleep

Dislikes – mom not being able to pick her up though adjusted to this after about 3 weeks

Latest feats of intelligence and advancement

Doing the farm puzzle that makes noise – she knows where all the parts go but she has a hard time adjusting them to fit right but often times can make it work.  Anna can also put the shapes in the right place on the wooden peg toy.

Putting together phrases with words, e.g., sentence heard early one morning “Dada and Mama, ALL DONE” I swear I heard the “and” She also said recently, “Sarah Jane is laughing” at the end of a long Sarah Jane temper-tantrum

Going peepee on the potty 1-2xs per day (does Anna get this shot out or does it belong to Elizabeth?) Also an occasional poop. With no drama. We are very impressed.

She is 85% for height and weight as of her last checkin (in March)

Clearing her place at the table – she brings her utensils to whoever is doing the dishes very carefully and cheerfully

Putting things back - this miight be her favorite part of any activity (how I know she is related to her father.)  In a related category, yesterday Anna spilled some water on the floor.  Carefully gave the cup to Elizabeth, unprompted got a towel, wiped up the water and hung the towel back up.

Eating with a fork and spoon – Anna loves her fork and would prefer to eat everything that way, with no help from anyone, including her morning English muffin which she prefers ripped into fork size pieces. She often picks up a piece of food, carefully places it on her fork and then puts it in her mouth.

Eating just about anything that is put in front of her – with the notable exception of potatoes, sweet or normal, roasted, mashed or what have you, she won’t have them. She accompanies her eating with lion noises, telling that food who is boss (definitely Anna.)

Ha – Hot, accompanied by blowing on her food or by putting her hand on whatever object we have said is too hot to touch. She likes to discover for herself.

Sarah Jane – though very hard to recognize

Elizabeth – Also very hard to recognize, sounds sort of like BeBet

Owen – When pointing out a boy or waiting for Owen by the window, she LOVES Owen

Byebye – said with drawn out southern accent

Pwuueeeee – said with triumphant smile because we had to work on this for a long time and she knows it will get a BIG response. She also always puts her hands on either side of her face and tilts her head flirtatiously

Potty & PooPoo – usually said when she wants us to get her out of bed. She’s very tricky, our little Anna.

Dacket & Boo – Jacket and boots – Anna’s favorite outfit.

Note that this section was very hard to write as it is a moving target, Anna is learning several words every day. These seem to be the ones that come up most often.
