The babies!

Dave and I just got out of our follow up ultrasound and wanted to report back. First, we confirmed that there are indeed two babies and I didn't just dream the whole thing. Definitely a possibility. Second, these babies are in there own amniotic sacs which was a worry so that is great news. If they were sharing as originally thought we would be in for a rough ride. Unfortunately they are sharing a placenta which puts us in a higher risk category (also means they are identical!). In about 17% of cases these types of babies have problems. For now they look healthy and perfect. Twin B (on top) had its foot in twin A's face but other than that they seem to be sharing just fine. Picture below!
Twin A is on bottom, B is on top.

Sarah Jane at 3

Sarah Jane at 3

First day of school with Anna
First day of school in the Red Room

A typical Sarah-Jane-at-3-years-old day goes something like this:
She wakes up early (sometimes at 3 or 4 but most often around 5:30) and comes into Mommy and Daddy’s room. She wants her bottle and it needs to be heated up JUST SO and god help us if we don’t get it right. We make her a little bed on our floor: two blankets on bottom and mommy’s bathrobe on top and she snoozes with her bottle. When she’s done she either sleeps more or plays quietly with the toys that are scattered all over Mommy and Daddy’s floor. She also sometimes likes to go in and entertain Anna when Anna wakes up which M and D really enjoy!

When M&D get up she sometimes gets in the shower with them but not very often. I’d say we get her in there twice a week? Not hugely clean this little one. She doesn’t not like to have her hair washed and vastly prefers if we wash just wash the bottom. After the shower we go into get dressed. She spent a great deal of time being hugely difficult to dress but is much more agreeable now. She does a very good job getting most of her clothes on by herself which I find very impressive.
After clothes she comes in to help mommy with her makeup. She knows all the steps and likes to put the powder on with the soft brush. We used to try and brush her hair. For a while it worked if we let her put her feet in the sink and play with the water but now we just wait for Elizabeth to come who has much more luck.
At 8 we head downstairs and Elizabeth arrives. We have “Eatmeal” which has to be heated up and then put in the fridge to cool down. Only Elizabeth can do the cool down correctly. She has milk, PBs and a little bit of brown sugar on her oatmeal. She usually eats about three bites.

Then mom and dad leave for work and Elizabeth loads everyone in the car and heads up the hill for the pre-school drop off. Sarah Jane just started at Berkeley Hills and so far loves her “New School” (“Mommy, I go my new school?”) She is in the Red Room and has Teacher Terri, Lisa and Chris. Four kids from Bari’s also are at Berkeley Hills, Colm (best friend), Zachary, Wade and Lucy. Sarah Jane shares a cubby with Wade. Wade wears batman PJs to school most days. Those are the only friends she says she plays with, I think she doesn’t know the other’s names yet. School goes from 9 to 1. First they play inside. Then they have circle time and snack and go outside. Then they have lunch then more circle time and then they get picked up. It’s a hard life…

For lunch Sarah Jane gets a cream cheese sandwich on raisin bread, and then two of: tomatoes, carrots and humus, crackers, fruit, cheese sticks or anything else we can find that she will look at and reject. She eats virtually none of it.

Sarah Jane gets picked up on Monday and Wednesday by Zeke, on Tuesday and Friday by Granma and on Thursday by either her mom or Elizabeth. (For the first two weeks of school I dropped her off 8 of 10 days which was very fun.) Sarah Jane likes being picked up by Zeke best but he cheats and brings her chocolate (Zeke’s treats) so it’s not a fair contest.

Zeke or Granma takes Sarah Jane takes Sarah Jane straight to the park at Bonita and Hearst where Elizabeth rules the nanny scene. One nanny there, Juanita loves Sarah Jane lots and Sarah Jane is very well behaved for Juanita.

After the park they come home and try to avoid taking a nap. Sarah Jane gets very tired and wants to lie down but Elizabeth works very hard to keep that from happening. At 5:30 Anna gets dinner but Sarah Jane waits for Mommy to get home from work which happens right at 6 along with Katie (Owen’s mommy.) Sarah Jane likes to pack up Owen’s stuff and Katie is very patient with the five minutes this adds to her night. I LOVE coming home because Sarah Jane hears the key and comes running yelling “Mommy Mommy Mommy” and gives me a big hug. I love it!

We find something to eat for dinner. I make two plates and then eat most of Sarah Jane’s. She has a hard time sitting at the table, cant’ decide on the seat she wants, what silverware she wants, what she wants to drink etc. Big production to get her settled. Then we mostly get two or three bites down and that’s it. We often have noodles, a salad with chicken, burritos, or something else that got put together in under four minutes which is my specialty. I need to work on putting more food in front of her to try but that takes a lot of effort.

After dinner we go upstairs, put Anna in the bath (though often not anymore as Anna started to not like it) and then we go downstairs and hang out together from 7:15 to 8ish. We read two books on the big read couch. Current favorites are “Welcome to Your World Baby” “Owl Babies” “Boston” (find the animals by Sage Stossel) “Hug” and “Ferdinand”, a good list! She still likes to repeat many times. Not so interested in finding new ground where books, or pretty much anything, is concerned.

At 8 or right before we attempt teeth brushing (“me first, you second”) and bed. Never easy. Sometimes a bribe with a Zeke’s treat and a pinky promise for no fussing during reading time works. Sometimes not. She sometimes goes to bed in her own bed. She sometimes insists on going to bed in Mommy’s bed “You carry me in” (after she goes to sleep we transfer her.) I know this is not best practice but so difficult to be best practice! She also insists that I work in my office while she is falling asleep. Very good for my work habits. Not so good for getting the kitchen cleaned.

She is fully potty trained as of August, no diapers at night (and only had one accident in the very beginning) but she will not go potty on suggestion so she often waits hours and hours in between. We were very proud of how quickly she got potty trained at night. She woke up for about a month with a dry diaper and we talked about it every morning and then one night she announced no diapers. And after that, no diapers. Amazing when things go well.

Sarah Jane is very good at puzzles. In fact, when we were at Tahoe she helped me do a couple of 100-150 piece real puzzles. And she really helped! She can do the big floor puzzles all by herself and does the wooden animal alphabet puzzle faster than I can.

She still knows all the letters but is less interested in them than she used to be. We don’t really yell out when we see them on bill boards on in books anymore though sometimes she surprises me.

She is a VERY good big sister and is very sweet with Anna. She gives her lots of hugs and kisses and looks out for her. She’s also a strict disciplinarian and often says “No Anna, NO” kind of like talking to Pickle. She is usually ignored. She almost never fusses when Anna pulls her hair and is pretty good about sharing though not an angel. Two of everything works better than one.

She does NOT like jeans. She does like dresses. She does NOT like having her hair brushed. She does like buckling her car seat in the car. She does not like waves, the chickens or Pickle jumping though she recently announced that when she gets married “Pickle can come?” She likes to put on the wooden shoes at Granma and Zekes. She loves Brady but they can only last about 20 minutes before there is yelling and in your face confrontation. Those two can push each other’s buttons! She loves tea parties, painting and playing outside with the sand. She likes going to Starbucks with mommy because she gets a treat (mini-scone.) She does not like to eat.

She is very good for Elizabeth, most days. She is a grouch when she wakes up. She is persistent and usually gets whatever she wants. She has a hard time remembering to say please. Time outs no longer work as they make her very upset. She refuses to sleep in side her covers and gets very hot at night (I don’t think she’s actually related to me.) She says funny things like “Mommy, let’s get new baby. But keep Anna. But put baby in your tummy, not mine.” When we finish reading a book she often likes to read it to me.

Oh, and how could I almost forget! She LOVES “Doe A Deer.” Lilly from Bari’s gave out CDs as party favors and they had Julie Andrews songs on them. Sarah Jane loves Julie Andrews so I bought the Sound of Music and boy is it a hit! We only watch it when we are on planes or in the car for a long trip but she is a BIG fan. She loves to sing Doe a Deer and we do so EVERY TIME we get in the car, the WHOLE time we are in the car. She can do all the words and even some of the different parts in the medley.

Recently we've had some fun adventures.  We flew to Boston and drove to Hanover for our Tuck reunion and a visit with Aunt Kiki, Uncle Geogg, Cousing Blake and Nana and Papa.  We went apple picking in Sebastopol and camping in Sonoma.  We also had Halloween and the Chun's came over for dinner and trick or treating.  Lots of fun times!

That’s Sarah Jane at 3.

Anna at 1 year!

Month 11 was very satisfying!  Most excitingly Anna learned to walk.  She also got real hair (the Mohawk is *almost* gone), ended with three teeth (two more than she started with I believe), started making noises that sound likes real words (though they aren't realy words, just noises) and, in her father's opinion, is a real person now.  She went to Myrtle Beach and spent time with her Hoverman family (Nana, Papa, Aunt Kiki, Uncle Goeff, Cousin Blake, Uncle Matt and Aunt Laurie were all there), spent time at Tahoe with her Smuesby family and celebrated her birthday at least 3 times.  She continues to be our very own Bambam and walking has only made it more pronounced.  She leads with her head and is constantly falling which makes her cry sometimes but she shakes it off quickly.  She continues to have very little self-preservation instinct which is funny until it's not.  She has NOT figured out how to go down stairs backwards so she heads straight down on her feet.  Ok when it's two stairs.  Not ok when it's more.  She started out the month happy Anna and ended it much more solemn and thoughtful.  (Since I am writing this a month late I know that Happy Anna came back and Solemn Anna is really Teething Anna which was a relief.  We missed Happy Anna!)  Anna still loves to hug and cuddle.  She is a very good sleeper and is starting to even sleep late (6:30 feels pretty late to me!  Sometimes she even makes it to 7!!!)  She is down to four bottles a day (though they are big bottles) and she is a good eater at all meals except breakfast.  She still refuses to eat anything that comes on a spoon or a fork preferring to feed herself.

A typical Anna day goes something like this:

She wakes up initially at about 6 and after a quick fussing/grunting session she gets a warmed up 6oz bottle of whole milk.  She usually goes back to sleep post bottle and snoozes in her crib until 6;30 or 7.  When she wakes up the second time, Sarah Jane, who has been awake for sometime and usually playing quietly (sometimes) in her parent's room, runs in to say good morning, allowing her sleepy parents a five minute-ish snooze.  After we get her up we begin the daily battle to keep Anna out of trouble.  She likes to crawl into the shower, fully clothed, so we have started letting her hang out in the shower while we shower which has had the side effect of making her big sis much more interested in getting clean!  After we get her dressed (a HUGE struggle since she does NOT appreciate being on her back on the changing table) we head downstairs for breakfast.  She's not much of a breakfast eater but can usually be persuaded to have some fruit.  Elizabeth shows up at 8.  Anna claps and beams.  Her sister is not so enthusiastic.  Mommy leaves for work, Anna is just starting to wave goodbye and occasionally looks a little miffed but so far has not had any separation anxiety.  Everyone plays in the back room until Anna gets a little fussy, around 9/9:30 and has her second bottle in bed, and usually falls asleep, though often not.  Owen shows up at 9:30.  After a brief morning nap it's off on an Elizabeth inspired adventure.  The zoo, the park, the little farm, Target, burritos, they go all over!  At noon they have lunch, usually in a park.  Elizabeth is the queen of the park and gets all the other nannies to help.  It's an amazing sight.  In the afternoon there is some form of a nap.  Usually around 2:30 and it always involves a bottle but does not always involve sleep.  At 5:30 it's dinner time.  If mommy has cooked it's noodles.  When Elizabeth is cooking it's chicken, rice, zucchinis from the garden and tomatoes.  At 6 mommy gets home.  Anna always gives me a hero's welcome which involves a big smile and lots of arm waving and banging on her plate.  I make dinner for SJ and feeds Anna her second dinner (some of whatever we are eating.  Usually noodles again.)  After dinner we head up stairs for a bath.  Anna LOVES her bath but she does not love getting clean.  She likes to stand up in the bath and then look at me expectantly, waiting for me to say "Sit down Anna" which she does promptly because she knows I will clap.  Anna will do anything for applause.  After bath we wrestle into her pjs, always a struggle, and go downstairs to get her bottle.  I often attempt to read Anna a book before bed but she is not at all interested.  She gets very frustrated and swats any book away.  She heads to bed, with her bottle, at about 7:15.  Any later and we have problems but if I catch her just right, she goes straight down no problem.

Anna's favorite foods are cheese, cheese and cheese.  Preferably yellow.  She likes to drink out of cups, she fills her mouth up with water, spits it out and goes back for more.  Her favorite toys are things that make noise and babies that have eyes that open and close.  She likes pushing the strollers and the alligator walker.  She likes hanging out in her tent.  She loves eating dirt and sand.  She is a very good hugger.  She roars when she wants more.  She does not like having barrettes in her hair.  She still seems big to me and is wearing size 18-24 months comfortably.  Her eyes are more green than blue these days though are still changing and in the bathtub look blue.  Her hair is not coming in curly but seems to be fluffy, sort of like her dad's I think.  She looks to me like her Dad and her Uncle Nat.  She loves to make noises and spends a lot of time wiggling her tongue and singing.  In my humble opinion, I think she has a lovely and clear voice.

Below is the daily log (last month!)

Tue, Jul 20, 2010

Anna has two dinners most nights - she eats first with Elizabeth and then a second time with Mommy and Sarah Jane. She loves to eat!

Wed, Jul 21, 2010

Fri, Jul 23, 2010

Anna is hanging out with her dad and her sister this morning while Mommy travels for work.

Sat, Jul 24, 2010

Anna is on her way to Myrtle Beach for Hoverman family vacation. She was very good in the plane, as long as she was strapped into her car seat. She is squirmy! She also made lots of friends as she is a major flirt.

Sun, Jul 25, 2010

Anna hit the beach and headed straight for the water. Marching right in with no fear. Very impressive.

Mon, Jul 26, 2010

Anna did very well adjusting to the time change and the new crib. She has been going right down at night no problem (in contrast to her big sis.)

Tue, Jul 27, 2010
Anna went out to dinner to celebrate Nana and Papa's wedding anniversary. She was very well behaved but ended up much dirtier than she started!

Wed, Jul 28, 2010

Anna likes to eat sand. She does not seem to learn that it doesn't task good. Actually, Anna likes to eat anything. She is particularly fond of milkshakes from Papa.

Thu, Jul 29, 2010

Anna is enjoying her time with her cousin.  Actually she doesn't really notice him as she is much more interested in the adults but I'm sure that will change soon.

Fri, Jul 30, 2010

Anna enjoyed a bath with Aunt Kiki, Cousin Blake AND Sarah Jane.  Everyone got very wet.  No one got very clean.

Sat, Jul 31, 2010

Anna is headed home from family vacation and is once again a lovely happy baby on the plane. So easy Anna!

Sun, Aug 01, 2010

Mon, Aug 02, 2010

Tue, Aug 03, 2010

Anna impressed Aunt Whitney greatly today with her almost walking skills.

Wed, Aug 04, 2010

Anna is such a very good sleeper these days. We really appreciate it Anna! Thank you.

Thu, Aug 05, 2010

Anna was very good at mommy's work party and charmed all of my colleagues with her happy smile and her willingness to hug just about any one (though her hugs for mommy are really the best.)

Fri, Aug 06, 2010

Anna is a very good eater, consuming just about anything that is put in front of her.

Sat, Aug 07, 2010

Anna is walking! She took two steps on her own this morning and promptly crashed into the wall in our bedroom. Has not yet been repeated but we are on our way to toddlerhood.

Sun, Aug 08, 2010

Anna is walking more and more, I think we got up to four steps today. Her rate of improvement is truly impressive. AND her Hoverman grandparents were here to witness it!

Mon, Aug 09, 2010

Anna threw up all over her mother this evening. Big kid throw up. Stinky gooey chunks. And now my reader is as grossed out as I was. But not covered in throw-up. Be glad.

Tue, Aug 10, 2010

Anna's mom is solo without dad. We miss him. We are all tired.

Wed, Aug 11, 2010

Anna is starting real milk! Mainly because we are out of formula and her mother pretty much refuses to buy any more. Fed up with the stuff. Anna does not seem to mind. (Or notice.)

Thu, Aug 12, 2010

Anna celebrated her first birthday (one of many celebrations) with Aunt Kiki who is leaving for the East Coast. We will miss having Aunt Kiki in our lives!

Fri, Aug 13, 2010

Anna took her first steps that weren't heading towards someones open arms (walking initiated by herself.) She got up to 8 solo steps on her own.

Sat, Aug 14, 2010

Anna ate at Saul's with Nana and Papa this morning. She did not like French Toast or Pancakes. She DID like watermelon. Anna is not much of a breakfast eater.

Sun, Aug 15, 2010

Anna celebrated her first birthday party today at the Tilden Trains (in tandem with Sarah Jane.) She was an excellent sport but does not like chocolate cupcakes.  She had two friends at the party - Drew Chun and Hazel (Lucy's sister.)  She wore a pretty yellow dress and a creamy white sweater.
Blowing out her candle (or just plan grabbing it.)
The biggest "kids" at the party
The tent was a hit
Not a fan of the cupcake.  Odd since she eats everything else.

Mon, Aug 16, 2010

Anna is suddenly getting a bit grumpy. Where did Happy Anna go? She gets mad when she doesn't get something she wants (though she gets over it quickly) and she spends a lot of time in thoughtful contemplation (when she used to just smile and coo.)

Tue, Aug 17, 2010

Anna is learning to share! This morning she and Sarah Jane hung out in bed with mommy and Sarah Jane wanted Anna's passy. Sarah Jane cried and cried and suddenly a light-bulb went off in Anna's head and she took it out of her mouth and handed it to Sarah Jane. Then she roared, and looked expectantly until Sarah Jane handed it back to her. What a fun game!

Wed, Aug 18, 2010

Anna is starting to make sounds like words. She doesn't make the actual word sounds but she makes the correct intonation for things like "byebye" and "Sarah Jane." She can also very adamantly shake her head no, especially when being asked to eat something she'd rather not.

Thu, Aug 19, 2010

Anna is ONE! She had a wonderful birthday morning with lots a presents (a puzzle from GPapa, a book from GG, clothes, some books and her very own baby whose eyes open and close from mommy and daddy and a cool wooden box with holes for shapes from Sarah Jane (who picked it out herself with some guidance from Diapers.com)
Anna opening presents in bed
Her very own baby!
What lucky sisters!

Anna at 11 months!

What a wonderful, fun, happy little Anna we have!  She is a joy to be with.  This month got to spend lots of quality time at Glenbrook with her Smuesby family where we discovered that Anna loves the water at the beach (and has no fear).  And (thank goodness) her mother managed to take more photos.  She is pretty cute in her photos.  I had a hard time choosing.

Sun, Jun 20, 2010

Anna spent most of the day with Gramma and Zeke. Zeke actually got Anna to go back to sleep after she woke up in her nap. That has to be a first!

Mon, Jun 21, 2010

Anna may be headed to one nap land sooner than expected.

Tue, Jun 22, 2010

Anna is cruising! She can jet around on her little feet as long as someone is holding her hands.

Wed, Jun 23, 2010

Anna's hair is actually starting to fluff out a bit in places. Just not everywhere.

Thu, Jun 24, 2010

Anna has a runny nose and is waking up earlier and earlier. I think teeth though don't see any peeking through.

Fri, Jun 25, 2010

Anna was quite sad today. She is not doing well with this tooth (which continues to refuse to make an actual appearance but which is clearly bothering her.)

Sat, Jun 26, 2010

Anna spent the day at Brady's birthday party in the city hanging out with "Brady's Blake" aka Baby Drew. She was a very good sport despite only a brief nap in the stroller. She does NOT like tart yogurt.
This is one happy happy baby

Sun, Jun 27, 2010

Anna loves, loves, loves to play outside crawling all over the grass and in and out of the tent. She can entertain herself for a very long time much to her mother's massive appreciation.

Mon, Jun 28, 2010

Anna is still waking up at 4, maybe in pain due to teeth? Hard to tell. Requires a bottle to back to sleep. Argh. How do I keep getting myself in this situation?

Tue, Jun 29, 2010

Anna has many tricks now, and nearly all involve her hands - she waves with her whole arm, can high-five, can clap, can hug (mommy's favorite) and sings along when we go up the wooden hill.

Wed, Jun 30, 2010

Anna is potentially dropping her morning nap but then surprises us. She is truly not a regular sleeper. Her schedule remains a mystery…

Thu, Jul 01, 2010

Anna arrived in Glenbrook late last night and promptly decided to give up sleeping. Much to everyone else's discomfort at 4:20 in the morning.

Fri, Jul 02, 2010

Anna is completely done with eating mushed up food. She won't put anything in her mouth that comes on a spoon, even when she is very hungry!

Sat, Jul 03, 2010

Anna is not scared of the water! She crawled right in to the creek and played along with her big sister despite the fact that it was absolutely freezing. She also likes to eat the sand and would have consumed several rocks had she had her way.

Sun, Jul 04, 2010

Anna enjoyed the annual Glenbrook 4th of July golf cart extravaganza, watching happily from the baby backpack on Daddy's back while he rode through the parade. It looked a bit precarious but they both seemed to enjoy the experience.
Watching the parade
Are these folks related?
Bike riding with Daddy, following the parade

Mon, Jul 05, 2010

Anna had her first ride in the kid carrier on the back of dad's bike on a family expedition to the grocery store. No surprises - she hated her helmet, she loved it when dad went fast.

Tue, Jul 06, 2010

Anna slept late this morning, all the way to 7:50 (when she had to be woken up.) This was actually her morning nap as she woke up at 5 and demanded a bottle until 5:45 when her mother finally got out of bed and fetched one for her…

Wed, Jul 07, 2010

Anna engages in a nightly wrestling match post-bath, pre-bottle. She is NOT easy to get in her pjs!

Thu, Jul 08, 2010

Anna's big sis has the ability to make Anna laugh hysterically. It is infectious!

Fri, Jul 09, 2010

Anna has now officially "slept late" this entire week! She is still waking up for her bottle but later and later and then went back to sleep. Dave and I have been enjoying the change immensely!

Sat, Jul 10, 2010

Anna went hiking on Mount Tam today with Daddy, Mommy, SJ, Aunt Kiki, Uncle Geoff and Cousin Blake. She rode in the Ergo all the way up and sang most of the way. She ate pancakes at the top and then slept most of the way down. Very nice morning!

Anna is our bambam - her favorite activity is climbing into her bouncy chair, knees down and riding it like a horse holding on to the top and yelling. When she's not doing that she's sprinting for the stairs. When she's not doing that she standing up and trying to climb up whatever flat surface is in her way.

Anna is such a brave and fun little girl - she loves the beach and thinks playing in the water is lots and lots of fun. She also likes sitting in her little green chair with all the other folks sitting in their chairs.
