Eli & Roby are 3!

The boys turned three on Saturday.  Wow were they excited.  So was I.  I officially love three.  We kicked off the celebration weekend with a pancake breakfast attended by Grandma & Zeke, followed by presents, soccer (Anna and the boys), burritos, more soccer (Sarah Jane), a birthday party (Eli & Roby's friend), dinner at Grandma's house with cupcakes and ice cream AND THEN woke up on Sunday for french toast, followed by our birthday party prep, birthday party at 11 with Melita the singer, then bouncy house, then pizza, then bouncy house, then cake and singing, then bouncy house, then balloons and bubbles and goodbyes, then present opening and THEN a birthday party for Sarah Jane and another birthday party for a friend of the boys which we have, at this point, officially bailed on.  If you were exhausted reading that then you can join the crew over here who is happily passed out.  I'm wishing I could join them.

Actual birthday pictures below...

Birthday party video below.  If you look carefully you can see Anna and Roby.  Eli was hanging out in the back, not sure about the chaos.

At three, here is what the boys love:

Trains.  They love all "things that go" but they especially love trains.  They love reading about trains, playing with trains, seeing trains, going on trains, drawing trains (Sarah Jane is particularly good at doing this for them), making train sounds, and pretending to be trains.  They can sing all the words to "I've been working on the railroad" and do so quite often.

Their sisters.  The boys LOVE their sisters.  They get up in the morning and run straight in to the girls' room where they crawl into bed with Sarah Jane who reads to them until we are ready to get started.  (Yes, Dave and I have won the life lottery.  We are enjoying this phase.)  The girls and the boys play and play and play.  And sometimes they fight.  But mostly they play.
Patient subjects at the hair salon...

Games...

Playing at Ava and Nico's.  Dave recently made a tiny kid sized door in the fence between our house and our neighbor's.  Ava is 11 and Nico is 9.  My kids are BIG fans.  They come hurtling in the front door at 6pm home from the park or the library or wherever they have been out and about and run straight in, blurring past me in the kitchen shouting the one word, "mom-I-go-Ava-n'-Nico's?" and then they are out the back and through the little door and into their own secret place.  Sometimes Ava and Nico come play but more often they have the yard to themselves.  I know they are ok by the squeals that coming singing over the fence.  When I call, "kiddos, it's dinner time!" they come shooting through, one, two, three, four, race to the table, eat as fast as possible, then say, "Mom, I be scused?", toss their plates on the counter and are back out the door until bath and dessert.  I love that they have a special place but I miss them too.

Books: The boys LOVE books.  They love looking at books and being read to.  They start and end their days with books. Sarah Jane reads to them in the morning and at night they fall asleep clutching library books like they are lovies.

Blue & Red: Eli have fully embraced their assigned colors.  Eli is blue and Roby is red in all things.  Even their school art projects.
Other accomplishments: We've kicked bottles.  The boys are no longer holy terrors at night.  They actually go to sleep and it only takes 30 minutes instead of the dreaded 90 minute fight.  Words cannot express how much better our life is as a result.  They now take their nap on the couches instead of their beds.  That switch inexplicably was linked to when they got easier at night.  No idea why.
Eli can write his name.  Roby can spell his name.  They can both count things to 10 (not just say the words.) We are close on diapers.  We've had no diapers during waking times for a year.  We're now working on night.  We've made it through one night with no diaper and no accidents.  All the other nights, I've done laundry.  But I still have faith.  Below is a picture from our first victorious night, 2 days before they turned three.

What the boys don't love: Their soccer team - they sometimes participate but mostly not.  Roby still refuses to eat any fruit except watermelon and orange juice.  Thank goodness for that or we'd have scurvy.  Eli still doesn't like dessert or the less than healthy things on his plate.  And offered the choice between vanilla and other, he'll always choose vanilla.  They also despise non-soft pants of any kind but other than that, they are easy to dress.  Oh, except they prefer to wear their undies backwards.

Hard to believe that just three years ago we were here...

Hawaii

Happy Easter everyone!  I'm squeezing in our Hawaii recap in time to make room for the requisite egg hunt pictures to come.

We went back to the same magical spot on the Big Island this year as last.  We had our own pool and our own path down to a shady/sunny/small wave beach.  We ate pineapple and drank guava juice.  The kids got sugar cereal in the morning.  They were in their swim suits and in the pool by 6:30 in the morning, in bed totally zonked by 7:30 pm.  We went to the grocery store once, we drove five minutes to a neighboring beach twice.  One night we got a babysitter and went out but the kids were easy and fun so escaping wasn't quite as necessary this year as it's been in the past.   Despite the excitement of a tsunami warning and a scorpion in our shower (yes, according to google there are scorpions in Hawaii) it was, all in all, about as lovely as you could possibly get...

View of the ocean from our pool.  We saw several whales and one morning we watched a dolphin play.
"Our" beach was pretty lovely.  we were there with friends Avery (2) and Alexis (4)
The kids' favorite beach activity was burying themselves in the shape of a train.  There was a lot of "Whoohooo" (train whistle noise) as we took this picture.
Dave did some work.  You may not be able to tell but there is a phone in his right hand as he cast with his left.  Work-life-balance...
Dave and Jeff went fishing one day and caught dinner.  We had sushi that night.
The kids were not scared of the water this year.  The girls were really swimming in the pool and the boys got pretty brave by the last day.
We went to Hapuna State Beach, five minutes up the road.  According to the guide book they practiced for D Day here.
 We danced in the waves.
And the girls learned to boogie board.

Our last night we went down to our beach and I played with the camera while the kids played with the waves.

We said goodbye with a final perfect sunset.

Cowboy Small

Vicky took the boys to the park the other day and sent this picture along with the caption:

Eli "Cowboy Small" and his brother Roby "Just Roby"

The boys love the Small/Little books.  They also love dressing up. Mostly they wear princess outfits but sometimes they go with cowboy.  (We have a lot of princess gear and it is, quite frankly, better than prince gear...)

Lately (when not being cowboys or princesses) they are trains.  Someone is the Engine, someone is the Caboose and someone is the Coal.  Then someone gets derailed and you have to fix the train.  This provides great entertainment and works really well when you need to convince them to go great distances.

They are also really in to owies right now.  Probably because I (their mom) had a lot of owies in February.  They are fascinated with owies and the things that make owies feel better.  Yesterday Eli fell and hurt his head.  Then he heard an airplane and he said, "mommy, it's ok, the airplane will make me feel better..."

Weekend fun

We had a fun weekend.  I took the girls to the Ballet - Cinderella at the San Francisco Ballet.  Very fancy!
We took BART in.  The girls wore their dresses from GG (thank you!)
Then we lunched.  It was very hot (unusually so!) so we we asked to be moved inside.  Moods improved greatly.  The french fries and chocolate chip cookies helped too.
At intermission we examined the orchestra pit.  It was good to move around.  Sarah Jane sat quietly through the whole show.  Anna, not so much.
We got a lot of comments on the beautiful dresses.  The cowboy boots were a hit too...
Dave took the boys to the model train show while we were away.  The pictures do not do justice to the level of awesomeness that this reached.
For the record, halfway through the second act of Cinderella, Anna stage whispered to me, "Mommy, next time can the boys go to the ballet and we can go see the trains?"

Sledding - California style

We went to the beach the day after Christmas.

 First they played.
Then they discovered the sand dunes.
 Dave joined the fun.
 Anna made "sand angles"
Roby rolled...
... then climbed and rolled again.
Eli got a mouth full of sand but it didn't stop him.
 Roby kept going too.
Then he flew like a bird.
Sarah Jane enjoyed some quiet time.
We all enjoyed burrying Uncle Eric.
Hope you are all staying warm!
