Aunt Ellie's Peeps

Aunt Ellie and her friends Jess and Rachel have entered the Washington Post's Peep-o-rama contest now for five years running.  They have yet to win officially but they're champions in our view.  Here's the five years of Peeps.  Rules include using Peeps and being clever.  Hopefully the fifth one's the charm!

2009: Peep Bloom
In "Peep Bloom", peeps stroll along the tidal basin, enjoying peak bloom of the cherry blossoms. Our peeps can be seen running in the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler, practicing flying kites for the National Kite Festival, sharing a picnic, taking photos, and floating along in paddle boats.

2010: "Snowpeepcalypse" DC's major snowstorms, Snowpocalypse and Snowmageddon, were covered by the media from every possible angle.  That is, every angle but one.  Everyone seemed to ignore the plight of the Peeps during the record-setting snow levels.  Those poor Peeps were up to their ears in snow, as depicted in our diorama, and could barely move through the snow-clogged streets.  Those Peeps can't wait for spring (and neither can we)!

2011: Lady PeepPeep at the Grammys
Our diorama depicts Lady PeepPeep as she arrives at the 2011 Grammys to perform her hit song, "Hatched this Way."  She is carried down the red carpet in an egg, past throngs of reporters, photographers, and fans, while Justin Peepber waits in the background, upstaged by her grand entrance.

2012: Newt Peeprich's Moon Colony
At the end of his second term, President Newt Peeprich has delivered on his campaign promise and established a colony on the moon. Now he vows to keep out illegal aliens, achieve statehood, and win the right to vote--ending Washington's outrageous taxation of the colony without representation.

2013: Clarence Thomas makes a Peep!

On January 14, 2013, Supeep Court Justice Clarence Thomas stunned his fellow justices when he made a peep during oral arguments for the first time in nearly seven years.

Nicknames

In case you ever wondered, why people named Robert get called Bob, we now know the answer.  Eli has christened Roby, "Bobby."  It's starting to stick.

Eli, who is old before his time, can often be heard muttering under his breath, "Baaaaahbeeeee" and shaking his head as in "tsk tsk tsk" when Roby does something Roby-ish like climb out of his crib or dump out the legos and destroy the train tracks that Eli has painstakingly  pieced together.  Eli LOVES trains, all things trains.  He loves his ChuChu blanket, he loves his "rain" books (the t is silent) and most importantly the wooden train tracks.  He can ALMOST put them together himself.  He can definitely organize someone else to put them together for him.  He can run a train up and down the tracks for minutes on end (that's like saying "for HOURS" for a normal human being.  21 month old boys don't qualify.)

In addition to his train love, Eli seems to have his dad's cleaning gene; last night Roby dumped out the legos.  At first he looked surprised at the very loud noise.  Then he looked pleased.  Then he nearly pounded his chest in glee (earning his other nickname Captain Destructo).  I sighed and got down on my knees to clean up the mess while Roby looked on, smirking. I started to sing the clean up song "Clean up time, clean up time, time to put the XXXX away..."  hoping it would inspire him to help.  Eli, who was several rooms away, heard the song and came running, never one to miss an opportunity to clean.  Roby was in the way.  "Beep beep Bahhbee, Li keen" he said ("Excuse me Roby, Eli needs to clean.")  And clean he did, all the legos got put away.

Roby is more than Captain Destructo.  He has recently discovered that books are good for more than banging on his brother's head or throwing out of his crib.  His most recent favorite is the Big Red Barn.  He noticed that there is a cat (aka a "meow") on several pages and he turns each page in anticipation that it might be there and is so excited when it is.  "Meow, meow, meow!!!!" and bang bang bang with his finger. He will sit and look at books for a very long time (at least measured in 21 month old boy minutes.)  He gets quite annoyed when someone tries to read a book to him; he prefers to drive.

Below are some of my recent "RoLi" favorites from my phone.

Eli's cheese face

 Roby at the park
Terrible picture but here's a morning in our house: Sarah Jane in chicken costume, Anna naked, Roby dressed in Alice and Wonderland costume, Eli normal.
The boys at the park
 Eli "riding" his bike
Eli and Roby in my bike on the way home from CostCo
Eli hanging with friend Kylie at the park
The boys playing with their beloved trains
A recent half-hearted attempt at potty training.  The boys are fascinated with potties and love to sit on the toilet (the big one, not the little one.)  We haven't seen any real action yet but we are ready to go with our jelly beans when we do.

 Reading!

Winter adaptation

Sarah Jane's homework assignments always include a writing and picture drawing prompt.  This week they are learning about how animals adapt to Winter (hibernation, more fur, etc.) The prompt for homework was "What is your winter adaptation?"
Here is Sarah Jane's:

Smart girl.  I want to too. Also, totally valid; last I checked migration was a legit winter adaption.  (In case you can't see, it says "I want to go on a plane to Hawaii because it's warm.")
Here was her second go - bit more practical.  Much less fun.

That is all of us in our matching multicolored puffy jackets.  We are quite a sight toodling around Berkeley these days:

New Years Beach Day

We spent a perfect New Year's Day at Kehoe Beach by Point Reyes.  The kids did not get the memo this year and started the day at 5am.  Bit rough for their parents but we survived.

I had fun playing with my camera.

The kids had fun playing with their Aunt Whitney.

Grandma and Zeke organized the outing, made the food, transported the food and enjoyed the scene.
 Dave spent some time recovering.
Water was fetched with Zeke and Aunt Ellie.

The boys sported their new down jackets.
 Sand castles were built...

... and destroyed.  (Not pictured is Team Abby/Eric's attempt at a bigger castle.  We failed.)
 Sarah Jane enjoyed a walk...
... and a swing, with her Aunt Whitney
Eli surveyed the waves with his Dad

 And rode home with me
Good start to a new year.

Post Christmas fun

A couple of days after Christmas, Elizabeth took the boys for the morning and Dave and I headed up to the Lawrence Hall with the girls (sporting their new puffy coats) to play on the whale and check out the exhibits.

 It's a big whale.

The next day we headed to the San Francisco Aquarium with Aunt Ellie and her friend Eric.  While there we hit a new stroller capacity record and nearly caused Eric to expire.  Four kids + Aquarium = deep end of the pool.
The cardboard house continued to provide lots of joy.  It was still in pretty good shape in the picture below. It now looks like it has lived through several hurricanes and an earth quake or two.

The girls did LOTS of art projects.  These were a favorite (courtesy Uncle Matt and Aunt Lauri.)

Later in the week we had some rainy day fun.  This might have been the highlight for the kiddos.  Umbrellas courtesy Santa.
